Dear Madam
Some weeks ago a boy from Coldharbour – aged about 20 – whose name I have unfortunately forgotten – came to see me. Doubtless you will know whom I mean as he tells me he is a pupil of yours. He seems very fond of music and sings with a nice true voice though quite untrained. His playing is as of course you know quite elementary and I felt obliged to advise him against a professional career.
However if there is any other way I could help him musically I should be pleased to do so. He talked of trying to get into a music shop – I do not know what you think of this idea. With a little training he ought to be able to sing quite nicely as an amateur and it would be a great pleasure to him I think to get into a choral society. I understand that he also plays the cornet, but I do not suppose that his playing is up to the professional standard.
Yours faithfully
R Vaughan Williams
