Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Robert Müller-Hartmann
Letter No.: VWL2913
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
[12 May 1950]
Further to my letter of yesterday – there were two points which I forgot1
(1) By-ends “stricter sort”- This does not mean orthodox in doctrine but strict in conduct – the “Orthodox” in Bunyan’s time would be Church of England but very loose living – Probably By ends himself was extermely orthodox as regards doctrine
(ii) Act IV Bunyan Wallet = Reise Sack – I imagine the wallet was a small bag which hung on his belt belt – does not “Reise sack” mean a port-manteau!!??
