Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Herbert Byard
Letter No.: VWL3499
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
[August 1956]
Dear Byard
I am sorry you are not going to Dartington – your account of it sounds most depressing1 – I have never heard of Richard Halse – I hope he is not one of those people who thinks that wrong notes2 are the only music – If it means anything really to people by all means good luck to them – To my mind it only sounds dreary not solemn or gay or even vulgar but just dreary.

1. See VWL3358. Byard had apparently applied for a job at Dartington but following an interview, was not successful.
2. VW’s phrase for ‘atonal music’.
