Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Herbert Byard
Letter No.: VWL2708
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
August 2nd 1953.
Dear Byard,
I am sorry I have not answered your letter before, but I have been away and very busy. My feeling is that it is no good adding anything to what has been said as regards Barter.1 But I will still do something if you like.

P.S. I had a very happy account of your good works at David Gibbs’s wedding2. His sister is a great friend of mine, and she told me about it.

1. See VWL2702. Barter was conductor of the Bristol Philharmonic Society.
2. David F. Gibbs (Chairman of Bristol Bach Society (of which VW was President) and a violinist) married Irene Elizabeth Bach at St. Peter’s Church, Henleaze on 25 July 1953. This was noted as a very musical wedding by the Bristol Evening Post.
3. Postcript and initials by UVW.
