Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Gerald Finzi
Letter No.: VWL1224
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
[15th September 1939]
Dear Gerald.
Adrian Boult says he can get a better pp out of many strings than out of few – so, to my mind, when you get past the chamber orchestra stage the number of strings does not matter. So I suggest preparing for the normal orchestra 8.6.5.5.4 – By the way I had a letter from Rowe1 asking me if I had any work – wd it not be a good plan if you sent him the duplication to do.2
My love to Joyce
Yrs

1. A copyist. See VWL1536.
2. This probably refers to the preparation of performing material for the first performance Dies Natalis, unless Finzi helped with preparing parts for Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus.
