Dear Mrs Hadley
I can let you have the vocal & dancing part of the music quite soon now. I don’t quite understand who sings what in the “Vanity Fair” Scene. Do the 4 men sing “Let charming Bacchus” – I don’t know the words – I suppose they [are] real Elizabethan – in which case they wd have a tune of their own – can you tell me where I shall find it? Or if the wandering musician is supposed to sing it then I think we will put a real folk-song instead – and what has “Down among the Dead men” to do with it?
Yrs very truly
R. Vaughan Williams
P.S. I see I have not answered all your questions. I do not know any of the players you mention – but if they are good players it shd be all right. I shall meet my orchestra on the 10th1 & can get some more then.
I’m afraid I can’t suggest any one for the songs – unless possibly Alison Philips wd – though I don’t think I can ask him2
