Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Ralph Wedgwood

Letter No.: VWL211

[10th October 1906]

My dear Randolph

It would have been too lovely to come to you but Adeline’s sister Emmie is very ill at present and I know she won’t leave her just now – though I know she’ll long to come as you know I do – I do wish we could see you just once before the great day1 – we want to give you a festive present – especially in remembrance of a certain whiskey bottle which I broke & in memory of many festive evenings – in the shape of a set of wine decanters copies of an old pattern which we have fallen in love with – wd you think well of the idea – don’t trouble to answer unless you have turned temperance and object to them.
[In Adeline VW’s hand:]

Dearest Randolph – it was nice to see yr handwriting – but we can’t come – we are having anxious days – I wanted to tell you about Iris coming – I hope we shall be friends

[In VW’s hand:]

I continue – A. wrote this while in agony with a sprained ankle – to add to everything!
Good luck to you dear boy – I love to think of you and Iris.
