Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Diana Awdry

Letter No.: VWL773

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[8th September 1935]

Dearest Diana

I loved having you at Worcester – & I like hearing your grouses – because it means you trust me – it wd  be awful and we shdnt be real friends if you cdnt tell me everything.
The Va Suite went very well1  – though a little tenuous.
Now my dear – do have a little rest – don’t burn the candle at both ends and in the middle as well.
I am so sorry about your domestic crises – you must tell me all about them one day.
Love from

Uncle Ralph

I’ve forgotten your address!2

1.  Suite for Viola and Small Orchestra, Catalogue of Works 1934/11, first performed in November 1934 by Lionel Tertis to whom it was dedicated.
2.  PS on envelope addressed simply to Stinchcombe, Gloucestershire. Awdry’s new house was Drakestones.
