Letter No.: VWL956

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

July 19th [1936]

Dear Foss

Many thanks for your letter about the P.K.1  It seems impossible to make a financial success out of an opera.  It is very kind of Sir Humphrey Milford2 not to take up my friend’s guarantee.3
I am so sorry to hear of your illness. I do hope a good rest will put you right – we shall miss you badly.
Yrs

1. VW’s opera The Poisoned Kiss.
2.  As Publisher, head of the publishing side of the Oxford University Press.
3.  OUP published The Poisoned Kiss; or, the Empress and the Necromancer in vocal score in 1936. Clearly they had been offered a guarantee against loss.
