The White Gates,
 Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[23 January 1933]

Dear Adrian
I hope very much to be at the rehearsal on Monday – but I may possibly be prevented –
Now what I am frightened about in this Concerto1 is the balance [-] it may be overscored – so if I am not there I give you carte blanche to thin out the score as you wish if you do not think the pfte will come through enough (it is necessarily right on the top all the way through)
I hope Gustav2 will be at the rehearsal
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams

P.S. At all events you very likely won’t want all the desks of strings playing all the time.
