What lovely news & how sweet of you to telephone. – I heard all about it in London from Gibbs.  Of course you ought to have been 1st  – because yours must be better than all the others.  But still even as it is it is a sign of grace in the adjudicators.1

1.  Elizabeth Maconchy had been awarded third prize in the Daily Telegraph chamber music competition for her Oboe Quintet of 1932.  The first prize had been awarded to Edric Cundell and second prize to Armstong Gibbs (ex inf JD).
