Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Fritz Hart
Letter No.: VWL1390
Feb 25 [1940]
Dear Fritz
Many thanks for your two letters. We keep cheerful & confident here and prepared for anything and to withstand anything. Outwardly life seems to go on much as usual except we’ve all changed our jobs.
I am too old to do any of the real jobs so I go about picking up scraps. (Incidentally I conduct a rehearsal of the Messiah every Saturday).
We are full of hope here – but know we’ve got to go through a hard time. It is magnificent the way the English speaking races are automatically federating.
My love to Marvell
Yrs
