Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Harry Blech
Letter No.: VWL1550
The White Gates,
Dorking.
Thurs [September 1941]
Dear Mr Blech1
Of course I should be proud and pleased for you to play my 4tet if you consider it suitable for the programme.2 I have already heard from Dr Kalmus3 about it – & it occurs to me that such a very simple work might be out of place in such very modern surroundings.
However I leave that entirely to your judgement.
If you think of doing it will you get directly in touch with O.U.P. who control it. I think while Mr Foss is ill that Mr Peterkin would be the best person to approach.
Yours sincerely
R. Vaughan Williams
P.S. I received quite a cheerful letter from Foss on Saturday.
1. At this time leader of the Blech String Quartet and later (1949) founder and conductor of the London Mozart Players.
2. Household Music: Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes for string quartet, first performed by the Blech String Quartet on 4 October 1941. Three reports of the concert, which took place on October 4th, do not mention VW’s quartet so perhaps it was omitted.
3. Alfred Kalmus, London manager of Universal Edition.
