Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Rosamund Gotch

Letter No.: VWL1645

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Dec 10 [??1939]

My Dear Sister Rosamund1

(I should love to be your brother – but I’m much too old – I really ought to be an uncle – and Veronica’s great uncle)2

I would love to do what I can – But what?

I am not a member of the General Ctee of the British Council – but only of the music section – can I write to any of them for you – but I don’t even know why they are!3

Yrs

1.  Rosamund Brunel Gotch, maternal grandmother of Rosamund Strode, was a stage costume designer and a friend of Hugh Allen. She dressed over 160 productions at the Parry Theatre in the RCM, including The Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains, Hugh the Drover and Sir John in Love.
2.  VW was 8 years younger than RG!
3.  There is no record of the reason for RG’s request.
