Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Norman Peterkin
Letter No.: VWL1751
The White Gates,
Dorking.
[16 February, 1942]
Dear Peterkin
(Forgive war time paper)
(1) With regard to Roy Douglas and the Meyerbeer – I suppose I must accept as I have undertaken to provide a score and have not time to do it myself for at least 2 months. I suppose I will get it back in time provided anyone performs the work (I forget what proportion of the hiring fees goes to the composer).
As regards the style I certainly want it done “in a serviceable manner” using the original merely as a general guide.
It should be done for ordinary full orchestra – but liberally cued in.1
1. ‘The blessing of the swords’, an arrangement from Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots. Catalogue of Works 1942/6.
