Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Elizabeth Trevelyan

Letter No.: VWL1770

From R. Vaughan Williams,

Dorking.

Friday [late 1940s?]

Dear Bessie

I send herewith Mr Wright’s letter. I need hardly say it is absolutely confidential. I am a very bad judge of playing myself and even competent playing fills me with amazement of performers skill – but I did wonder after you left the other day whether this young man is more than competent & whether there are not dozens of violinists both in England and on the Continent who are equally competent – and we must remember that the BBC have the whole of Europe to choose from.
I also wrote to the Belfast BBC but they say they can do nothing without a recommendation from headquarters.
Yrs
