Dear Adrian

Sorry for the delay in answering. I didn’t even know the L.S.1 was down for performance, so I didn’t tear my hair and ramp round the room when I found that my hated rival had been preferred to me!2

1. London Symphony
2. Boult had written to VW on September 11th about an imminent concert: ‘I am very sorry indeed to say that the London Symphony is out after all.  The Walton got into the Radio Times before it was discovered that there was no room for two sets of timpani on the stage at St. Athan’s, and you know what we are about keeping to the Radio Times.  Apparently Walton has also whined to Legge and Legge is frightened.
