Letter No.: VWL1936

Dorking

October 1st 1944

Sir,

In a recent review of Gerald Finzi’s ‘Introit’ your contributor writes: “Mr. Finzi’s style in this work derives directly from the … music of the later Vaughan Williams, particularly his fifth Symphony”.  Finzi’s ‘Introit’ was written about l925, my fifth Symphony about 1938.
Your reviewer evidently credits Mr. Finzi with a remarkably prophetic soul – or is the derivation possibly the other way round?
Yours faithfully,
R. Vaughan Williams. 1
