1.  Norman Askew ran the Surrey Summer School for young musicians.  See RVW: a biography, p.324. The timing is a little curious, since the 1948 Summer School had concluded on 6 September – VW and Adrian Boult both visited and spoke to students once in each week. Possibly Howells was being invited to a planning meeting for 1949.
