Dear Peterkin
B Minor Mass
I feel ashamed to bother you about this again – but I have found an earlier Peters pfte arrangement of the Mass by Hugo Ulrich – which with a little emendation will do. According to Grove Ulrich died in 1872 – can I use this version safely?1
Yrs
R. Vaughan Williams
1. VW had prepared, with the assistance of Robert Müller-Hartmann, a version of the Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the B minor Mass by J.S. Bach (BWV 232) adapted to the English liturgy (see Catalogue of Works p.288). Hugo Ulrich was a largely unsuccessful composer who was, according to George Grove, a first-rate arranger of orchestral music for the piano (see G5).
