Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to John Barbirolli

Letter No.: VWL2358

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

January 26th 1952.

Dear John

Dictated
After going through my new work with some experts yesterday, I have come to the conclusion that it wants considerable revision, and I should like to make those revisions before I show you the work: this will take some time, and I fear will not be ready by next week.1
The Symphony by Gardiner is a good work
Yrs

R. Vaughan Williams

1.  VW is referring to the Sinfonia Antartica.  See VWL2357 for the event mentioned.  This paragraph is in the hand of UVW.
2.  John Gardner’s Symphony, Op. 2, had been given its first performance by Barbirolli at the 1951 Cheltenham festival with considerable success.
