The White Gates,
Dorking.
July 16 [1952]
Dear Mrs Hooper
At the meeting of the L.H.M.F.1 next week I am thinking of proposing among other things “Gerontius” – But I want to know first whether you think that the choirs in general and yours in particular would object to singing the words in church.
Yours sincerely
R Vaughan Williams
1. Leith Hill Musical Festival. Hooper was conductor of the Dorking Oriana Choir.

General Notes:
1952 is suggested because VW seems to have his letter to Hooper of October 1951 (VWL2291), about her choir’s reluctance to sing what were deemed inappropriate words, very much in mind. In fact Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius was not done at Leith Hill Musical Festival until 1957 when it was conducted by William Cole.
