Dear Mr Stubbs

I am very sorry that I have nothing ready for you.
I do not know whether you would care to do what I believe would be a 1stconcert performance of my motet “The Souls of the Righteous” written for the Battle of Britain Service in Westminster Abbey.  I will send you a copy if I have one left – otherwise it is published by the O.U.P.1
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1.  The motet, Catalogue of Works 1947/1, had been performed at the Abbey on 10 July 1947 at the dedication of the Battle of Britain Chapel.  The Tudor Singers gave the first concert performance at the Wigmore Hall in their Silver Jubilee concert on 30 April 1948 (see R.V.W.: a biography, p.284).
