Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Arnold Barter

Letter No.: VWL2723

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Sept 25 [?1939 ]

Dear Barter

I am so distressed by the notice that the Bristol Phil: is closing down – I do hope that something will be kept going – I feel that people will want music so badly these days – Could you not keep the practices going at all events?1

1. See VW’s letter to Herbert Byard (VWL2702): ‘This is sad news about the Bristol Phil. but I fear its no good flogging a dead horse, and I had better reserve my powder and shot for something useful.’ However this letter more probably relates to 1939 and the war period, rather than to 1953 when Barter stepped down.
