Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to John Barbirolli
Letter No.: VWL2957
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
March 3 [1949]
Dear Mr Barbirolli
I cannot get rid of a nasty cold & as I have two rehearsal engagements on Saturday & Sunday which I cannot miss I fear it is my duty to forego the pleasure of coming tomorrow & try & keep make myself more or less fit for my duties at the week-end.
It is a great dissappointment1 to me. Please accept my greetings both for yourself and your orchestra & give them my heartiest wishes for what I am sure will be a fine performance.
I return the tickets which your secretary kindly sent me
Yrs sincerely
R. Vaughan Williams

General Notes:
VW’s engagement on Sunday 6 March was in Birmingham, with the Clarion Singers, who were producing Sir John in Love. It is not clear whether he travelled up on Saturday, or whether he had another, more local, rehearsal to go to.
