Dearest Michael & Eslyn,

In case it gets abroad I want to tell you that Ralph is in the Middlesex for a very few days, having had a very minor operation.   The waterworks department again, but it was all decided on Saturday morning, & he was in the hospital by 12, operated on by 2, & hopes to be out on Tuesday for Sir John.¹  Its meant his missing the dress rehearsal, which has infuriated him, but its made spending pennies a comfortable occupation for spare moments again, not a full time job!  The surgeon is very pleased with him, the nurses as sweet as ever, & we feel tolerably at home in the hospital – I spend ¾ of the day with him, so its not too bad!  We’ll cancel Kings Lynn, so we’ll have Friday evening with you, which will be lovely.
