Dear VW

How lovely of you to write such a letter; which arrived this morning.  Our friendship has been very much “in absentia” during our long lives but has never been out of my mind and heart.  You have beaten me for you are still at your great life’s work, tho’ 2 or 3 years older than me. I am just Janet’s assistant nurse, and well content so to be.
If next time you are at Cambridge you were able to drive up here and see us it wld be lovely.  I have 80 letters and telegrams today but yours and RLW’s are the only ones I am going to answer today.¹

1. Trevelyan was one of VW’s oldest friends, from Cambridge days, when he was known as ‘Trevy’.   VW had written to Trevelyan on 15 February sending a copy of his opera Sir John in Love (see VWL4909), presumably to coincide with his 80th birthday on 16 February. RLW was Ralph Wedgwood.
