Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Alan Frank (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL3367

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

August 27th 1956.

Dear Frank,

Thank you for your duplicate of your letter to Stanford Robinson.1 The full score will be strings and piano & flute only:2 and much of it will be the same as Bridal Day, so I think it will be time to start on it when I come back from Majorca: so could I have the full score of Bridal Day to meet me the day after my return, on October 8th?
I have been through the songs in P.K. and will shortly send you a list of alterations and cuts in the music.  Perhaps you could have these alterations put into a vocal score and sent to the R.A.M.? so that they can get on with the music as soon as they like.  I think I could promise the revised libretto by the new year.3
My address in Majorca will be Hotel Bendinat, Palma de Mallorca, Spain from September 10th till October 7th: but please do not write unless it is urgent!
Yrs

RVW

I shall also shortly be sending you a list of the proposed alterations and cuts of Suns of Light,4 which we can discuss when we come back from abroad.

R.V.W.

1.  Robinson had conducted the first performance of The Bridal Day on television on 5 June 1953.  Perhaps he still had the score.
2.  VW is referring to a full score of Epithalamion, Catalogue of Works 1957/1.
3.  The Poisoned Kiss – on the planned performance at the Royal Academy of Music and the plan to revise the libretto see VWL3364.
4.  sic. Should read ‘Sons of Light’ [Catalogue of Works 1950/3].
