From R. Vaughan Williams,

London, N.W.1.

November 8th 1956.

Dear Alan,

In answer to three letters from you:
1: I have said that I will NOT have the Serenade recorded without soloists. Adrian agrees, and that is therefore postponed.1
2: The Choral Flourish went very well.  I was pleased with the way they sang it.2

3. Good about the American performances.  We have some particularly good friends at Ann Arbour who will be quite up to Skelton!3

1.  Frank had written to report that Adrian Boult was to record the choral version of Serenade to Music for Decca on 12 and 13 November at the Kingsway Hall.  This project was dropped but Frank was able to write in January 1957 that HMV planned a recording of the work conducted by Malcolm Sargent with the required mixture of 4 or 5 soloists with chorus.
2.  Catalogue of Works 1956/2 which had received its first performance at the Royal Festival Hall on 3 November.
3.  Frank had presumably reported some forthcoming American performances of Five Tudor Portraits at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  The friends mentioned were Profesor and Mrs Ross Lee Finney.
