March 21st, 1941

Dr. R. Vaughan Williams,
Whitegates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Dear Dr. Vaughan Williams,

I have been intending to follow up my telegram for several days, and now the news of the Prime Minister’s statement on the ban shows that a victory has been won by the force of public opinion.

There is no doubt that your own energetic action did much to force the change of line upon the B.B.C. and to cheer on democratic opinion, which has lately suffered many reverses.

You may perhaps have seen the statement which I personally made on first hearing the news of your action.  This was my very sincere feeling, and both I and my fellow victims were greatly encouraged by and grateful for your stand in support of free opinion.

This present capitulation of the B.B.C. leads me to hope that we may soon have the pleasure of hearing your new work broadcast.

Yours sincerely,
