Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to George Frederick McCleary

Letter No.: VWL3946

The White Gates,
Dorking.

12th February, 1948.

Dear McCleary
I am so sorry to give you so much trouble.
As regards what I said about “Tristan” on the platform at Charing Cross in 1892 – as we neither of us quite remember what I did say, I suggest being on the safe side and simply saying “and we discussed the performance.”
I return your typescript herewith.1
Yrs R Vaughan Williams

(R. Vaughan Williams).

Dr. MacCleary,
80, Corringham Road,
London, N.W.11.

1. McCleary was preparing a collection of essays for publication (On Detective Fiction & Other Things, published in 1960), including an essay “Cambridge in the early nineties” which includes this anecdote. See also VWL3947 and VWL3948.
