1. David Ritson Smith was Honorary Librarian and Honorary Secretary of the Royal Philharmonic Society from 1939 until 1948. He had been compelled to resign from the post of Honorary Secretary of the society due to ill-health, and the Honorary treasurer had written to members to ask if they would care to contribute to a token of thanks (see British Library manuscript RPS MS 389, f. 2)
