My dear Joan,
This is a very sad letter to have to write: I have been shut up, really tethered by the leg, for the last fortnight, by phlebitis, a silly complaint that leaves me completely well except for this leg, but the doctor will not hear of me doing anything so nice as going to Oxford next week.  I have written to tell Miss Potter.  I am sorry to have left it so late, but I have been hoping the doctor would re-consider his half given decree: but this morning he was adamant.  I am able to work either in bed or in a chair, but I have not been allowed even as far as the study yet.  I am so very sorry about this: and of course, sorriest at missing you and Martin.  I do hope you will find another speaker.
We both send our love to both of you.
