Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Evelyn Richmond
Letter No.: VWL4284
The White Gates,
Dorking,
14th October, 1948.
Dear Evelyn
Thank you very much for the press cuttings, which I had already seen in “The Times”.
I am so glad Mr. Howes1 (if it was him) thought well of the work.
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams
(R. Vaughan Williiams).
Miss Richmond,
734 Nell Gwynn House,
Sloane Avenue,
London, S.W.3.
1. Frank Howes, music critic for The Times newspaper. The main reports on the Sixth Symphony in The Times go back to April and May. A clearly positive response is shown by the report of the Partita in The Times of 30 July. All reviews in The Times were unsigned throughout VW’s lifetime (though some articles were by-lined “By Our Music Critic”). Frank Howes was a Times critic from 1925 and Chief Music Critic from 1948-1960.

General Notes:
A copy of a review of a concert for younger musicians at Boltons Theatre, Kensington, is with the letter; the connection with VW is not clear as no works by him are mentioned in the review.
