Dear Malcolm,
I was so pleased to get your letter. We were so sorry not to be able to hear you conduct my number six, but we were away on a long planned tour of Greece and Italy.
We have discovered that Job is on my birthday, so Ursula is taking me there for a birthday treat; it will be a pleasure to hear you conduct it. The optional cuts are only for stage use. In the concert hall I think it ought to be done complete. There sometimes seems to be a misunderstanding about the organ part, that should be organ solo and timpani, the cued-in band parts are only for use when the organ is absent or inadequate.
Love from us both
