From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

August 3 [1937]

Dear Miss Scott
I am planning going to Dartford next Thursday which I think is the visiting day1 – but I will not go if you are going or if you happen to know that anyone else is going. I did not go last week because I heard that Howells2 was going. Could you ring me up if you are going?
Does Ivor know anything about the publication scheme? If he does not of course I will not mention it.
I sent the songs to Foss3 about 10 days ago. It would be certainly unwise to mention any financial help to Mr. Foss. If the O.U.P will not take them at their own expense we might try Boosey & Hawkes.
Yours sincerely
R Vaughan Williams

1. Ivor Gurney was in a psychiatric hospital in Dartford. VW and others were trying to arrange publication of some of Gurney’s works.
2. Herbert Howells.
3. Hubert Foss of Oxford University Press. Foss eventually accepted twenty of Gurney’s songs for publication.
