Dear Nancy
Everyone must be grateful to you and your singers for three fine performances this year. I expected good singing in the “Passion” and we got it.1
As to the “Requiem”, as I had my doubts, as you know, whether we had “bitten off more than we could chew”. I was wrong!
We must go on to further sucesses next year.
Yours sincerely,
R Vaughan Williams
(i.e. Uncle Ralph)
1. Marsden conducted the Merrow Town Choir at the Leith Hill Musical Festival, singing the Brahms Requiem, and Bach’s St Matthew Passion. The performance of Brahms’s Requiem was on 18 May.
