The White Gates,
Dorking.

[26 May 1946]

Dear Nancy
Everyone must be grateful to you and your singers for three fine performances this year. I expected good singing in the “Passion” and we got it.1
As to the “Requiem”, as I had my doubts, as you know, whether we had “bitten off more than we could chew”. I was wrong!
We must go on to further successes next year.
Yours sincerely,
R Vaughan Williams
(i.e. Uncle Ralph)

1.  Marsden conducted the Merrow Town Choir at the Leith Hill Musical Festival, singing the Brahms Requiem, and the Dorking Bach St John Passion.
