Sir,
I am sorry to see that the organizers of the forthcoming series of Promenade Concerts propose to revive the old distinction between music and “British music.”  I imagine that works should be judged, for praise or blame, side by side with all other music of the past or of the present.  Is it still necessary to segregate the “British composer” as if he were unfit?
Yours faithfully,
Ralph Vaughan Williams
