THE LETTERS OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to George Bell, Bishop of Chichester

Letter No. VWL5303

Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to George Bell, Bishop of Chichester

Letter No.: VWL5303

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

May 12th 1955.

My dear Bishop,
Thank you for your kind and helpful letter.1 I will not do any more till I have your report from your friend in the Ministry of Education. Martin Shaw already has a Lambeth degree, which was granted him about ten years ago:2 I was thinking more of Oxford, Cambridge or Dublin. Perhaps we can talk of this when I meet you on June 16th. I am not altogether in favour of a dinner, for one thing, poor Martin would probably not be able to eat it!
Yours sincerely
R Vaughan Williams

1. See VWL5302 and footnote. VW had suggested that Martin Shaw be recognised for his contribution to music with an honorary degree or an honour.
2. Shaw had in fact received his Lambeth degree of DMus in 1932.
