Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Percy Grainger
Letter No.: VWL5288
The White Gates,
Dorking,
26th January 1949.
Dear Grainger
Thank you so much for the delightful books about Sweden, which have given my Wife and me great pleasure to look at.
It was a great pleasure to welcome you both here, and I do hope we shall see you again when next you come to London, which must not be long.
Mr. Tunbridge was very polite and quick. He showed me some of the results of the other photographs and they looked excellent.
With kind regards from both of us to both of you.
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams
(R. Vaughan Williams).
Mr Percy Grainger,
7, Cromwell Place,
White Plains, New York.
I add a few words to R’s letter to thank you both for my share in a delightful present – I am learning something about Sweden – your wife’s country – How cool and clean it looks! One cannot imagine a speck of dust! I admired many things, especially the glass [?]
I must confess to Mrs Grainger that I failed to prevail on Ralph to wear his pullover for the photograph.1
Your visit was a very happy one for us
All wishes for 1949

1. Grainger had apparently asked for a colour photograph of VW and this had now been arranged; see VWL5285.
