Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Frederic Wilkinson

Letter No.: VWL866

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Feb 8th [1936]

Dear Mr Wilkinson

Thank you very much for your letter about the ballet.  I have got so many things on hand at present that I must put off considering revision of the ballet until later – so I will keep your interesting suggestions by me for the present – Many people have told me what a beautiful production they thought it was and I entirely agree with them – and we two are perhaps the only people who realize how much more could have been done both in the production and the music if we had had more time.1
Yours sincerely

R Vaughan Williams2

1.  Frederic Wilkinson, headmaster of the Polytechnic Secondary School, had produced a revised version of the ballet On Christmas Night, CW 1926/2, at Cecil Sharp House and had written 360115 afterwards to VW making some suggestions about the scenario. VW did not reply fully to him until August 1937.  See VWL1203, which is printed in CW p.122-3.
