Letter No.: VWL4643

The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

15th April, 1953.

Dear Sir,
I am sorry, but I cannot judge of your bass part unless I have seen a copy of the whole work and I have not got a copy by me.
Perhaps you could send me one?1
Yours faithfully,

R Vaughan Williams

(R. Vaughan Williams).

K.O. Smithers, Esq.,
37, Albert Road,
Eaglescliffe,
Durham.

1. Smithers had asked for the bass part of VW’s Household music, of which the full orchestra arrangement was still only in manuscript. VW had suggested that Smithers create a bass part himself; see VWL4645. Smithers was a fellow former pupil from Charterhouse.
