The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.
22nd. March, 1950.
Dear Frank,
I am sorry to trouble you again, but I want further advice about the proposed photography of “Pilgrim’s Progress”.
I hope that one day you will publish the work, but I do not think I can venture to ask you to print it, even if you were willing, before I have heard it, because after performance I might want to make several alterations.
On the other hand, if there are a hundred photographed copies knocking about will it interfere with your sale if you ever really with to publish it.
Perhaps you can tell me what you think about this.1
Yours sincerely,
R Vaughan Williams
(R. Vaughan Williams).
Alan Frank, Esq.,
Oxford University Press.
38a, Soho Square, W.1.
1. Frank responded by assuring VW that OUP would want to bpublish the work when it was ready, and offering to distribute the photographed copies on VW’s behalf, so that they could control any production fees which might arise in the future.
