Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to John Barbirolli

Letter No.: VWL3330

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

March 6th 1958.

confidential.

Dear John,

I have received one of Stanley Bate’s usual letters saying that he is neglected.  Would it worry you very much to tell me in confidence what you think of his work? and whether you feel inclined to encourage it? Stanley is an old pupil of mine, and I am fond of him personally, so I feel it difficult to decide what his merits are.  I will naturally keep your views to myself.1
