Dear Gerald,
You have probably by this time heard from Lady Croft that they offer you £25. We will try and squeeze some more out of them. Meanwhile, go ahead. And what we can’t get out of the Butterworth Trust we’ll get out of the Cheeseworth Trust.1
My love to Joyce

1. Lady Croft was Secretary of the Butterworth Trust. It is not clear to what event this refers, but it is referred to again in VW2658, where the amount offered has been raised to £40. The ‘Cheeseworth Trust’ was VW’s joke; he would fund the balance himself.
