I hate the idea of giving away manuscripts, but I suppose if Mr. Carleton Smith wants one he can have one, if there are any you can spare out of your library. I fear I have none of my own because the ones I do not want myself I always destroy.¹

1. Frank had written saying that Carleton Smith, President of the Arts Foundation of New York, had asked him to approach VW on his behalf. He wished to purchase a manuscript to add to a collection which he was assembling to present to the Library of Congress.
