Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Robert Müller-Hartmann

Letter No.: VWL1450

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Dec 18 [1941]

Dear Mr Müller-Hartmann

(Forgive me for making you out an academic1)
I hear that you have written some delightful pianoforte pieces – would you play a short group from them (about 10 minutes) at one of our Wednesday concerts? It would give everyone much pleasure I am sure.
You will probably tell me that you are not a virtuoso pianist – my answer is that I am sure you would play your own music better than anyone else.
May I leave the date doubtful for a short time – it will probably be either Feb 18 or March 4.2
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1. VW had been under the impression that he was Dr Müller Hartmann, see VWL2866, VWL2867,VWL2868 etc.. At this time Müller-Hartmann was living in Dorking with Yanya and Genia Hornstein, friends of the VWs.
2. See VWL2869; it appears that Müller-Hartmann declined to perform and Ruth Dyson performed his works instead.
