My dear Martin & Joan
The Saturday book¹ is a treasure. I’ve only just got it, as Ralph stuck like a clam – & we have both enjoyed this fruit of your wild extravagance, so very much.  Thank you.
We had our usual carol party, 40 people, English traditional carols, and the most potent cup I’ve ever had, brewed by Christopher Finzi, who was staying with us, & people from 16 upwards.  All the women enchanting, & all the men fascinating, I thought. then after clearing up the debris, we relapsed into a more or less quiet Christmas, which we much enjoyed.
We are off the the Finzis for ten days at the New Year.  It will be lovely in the country for a while & I only hope not snowy, but the house is warm, in every sense.
Our best love to you both, & may 1957 be full of pleasures, & improve hugely on your 1956, & thank you again.
