My dear Alice,

How sweet of you to send us ourselves. Ralph doesn’t like my hat – neither in the flesh – or straw; or picture – but what can one do?
We had a wonderful time in America and loved the country. No one had told us how beautiful it is. We went right across to California, saw Niagara & the Grand Canyon, buzzed about in small aeroplanes, and went up The Empire State Building, to the Metropolitan Opera twice, heard the Phil. Drank a lot of rye whiskey, & milk shakes, and absolutely covered the country. And your compatriots did us proud, & were absolutely delightful to us. It was a terrific experience. All the same, we enjoy being at home again.
