I have much pleasure in stating that Mr Griffiths has been my pupil for about 2 years. He is an excellent musician and a composer of talent – and of excellent general culture and would fulfil any post to which he was appointed in a most conscientious manner.

Griffiths was born in Aberystwyth, went to Clifton School in Bath, followed by an MA at Oxford (where he had actually won a scholarship to study the organ but due to a severe scoliosis was not physically strong enough to take that up). He then studied at The Royal College of Music where Vaughan Williams tuaght him and Benjamin Britten was a fellow student. He composed a few songs and had them published, including The Old Men, To A Squirrel and Come Unto These Yellow Sands. He taught at Durham School, followed by Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh in the early to mid 1940s, before working around the world as a freelance examiner for Trinity College. He was also a music critic for The Scotsman.
